Teresa “Susanne” Burry February 28, 1969 - February 13, 2026

It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of Susanne Burry, who left us after a brief but courageous battle with cancer. Born in Gander, Susanne spent most of her childhood there before moving to St. John’s to attend the Grace General Hospital School of Nursing—a decision that would shape the rest of her life.

Susanne graduated in 1990 and spent her entire nursing career in the Emergency Department and Intensive Care Unit at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander. Over her 34‑year career, retiring in 2023, her dedication, skill, and compassion touched countless lives. She devoted her life to caring for others in their most vulnerable moments and formed deep friendships with her colleagues that remained strong throughout her lifetime.

Susanne was predeceased by her father, Eric; her uncles, Bill and Paul; and her Aunt Daphne and Uncle Bill Pittman.

Leaving to mourn are her mother and best friend, Glenda; her brothers, Darren (Marsha) and Daniel; and her beloved nephews, Max and Jake. Susanne was incredibly proud of her nephews—she loved them dearly, and they adored her in return. Throughout the years, Susanne was exceptionally close to her mother, and they shared countless hours together—watching movies, going on road trips, knitting, and quilting side by side. Their bond was one of the great joys of Susanne’s life.

She also leaves behind a close and loving circle of aunts and uncles: Boyd Goodyear (Valery), Hazel Collins (Larry), David Goodyear (Linda), Ted Goodyear (Sharon), Bradley Goodyear (Angela), Audrey Plunkett (Tony), Margaret Rogers Burry, Margaret Moss Burry, Bruce Burry (Sharon), Robin Burry (Valerie), and Joan Burry. A large extended family of cousins and a wide circle of friends will feel her absence deeply. A special mention goes to Fraser and Yvonne Lush, longtime family friends whom Susanne was exceptionally close to over the years. She also held dear her friendships in Bloomfield with Craig and Lori Holloway, who were supportive family friends since early childhood.

Upon retirement, Susanne moved to Bloomfield to help care for her father during his illness. She loved spending time in their large garden, welcoming visits from family and friends, and returning those visits in kind. Susanne also enjoyed quilting and knitting scarves, hats, and mittens for those she loved. She had a remarkable gift for colour‑work knitting and created intricate patterns with ease. She adored her cat, Tilley, and had a special fondness for pansies—her favourite flower—which she grew every summer. She also enjoyed colouring in her quiet moments.

The family would like to thank the Dr. Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic; Dr. Hyde, who provided exceptional care during Susanne’s brief illness; the Community Health Program; and the Palliative Care Unit staff for their compassion, understanding, and support.

Cremation has taken place, and a quiet gathering of close friends and family members will be held at a later date to celebrate her life. Supportive visits from family and friends who wish to honour Susanne are warmly welcomed. Flowers are gratefully accepted, or donations may be made to the Dr. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.

“Her compassion was a quiet light—
steady, gentle, and freely given.
In her kindness, hearts found comfort,
and her warmth remains with all
who were touched by her.”

    To Glenda and family,

We are so incredibly sorry to hear of Susie’s passing. She was truly an incredible person — a kind, gentle, and generous soul who touched so many lives in quiet but meaningful ways. Growing up in Gander Apartments, Susie was such a special part of my life. She was always there without hesitation — whether my mom needed a ride somewhere or just a friendly visit. So many of my childhood memories include her: shared suppers around the table, summer BBQs filled with laughter, and the comfort of knowing she was just nearby. One memory that has always stayed close to my heart is Valentine’s Day. For several years when I was little, I would receive a card from a “secret admirer,” and tucked inside was always a McDonald’s gift card. It wasn’t until many years later that I learned it was Susie who had been leaving those cards for me. That was who she was — thoughtful, playful, and quietly generous, never looking for recognition, only wanting to bring joy to a child. My mom and I feel so incredibly privileged and grateful to have shared so many years with her. The kindness she showed us, the memories she helped create, and the love she gave so freely will never be forgotten.

Oh my Glenda….this sure was a shock to read just now. Only one way to describe Glenda….she was an angel. No matter where we met she ALWAYS had a huge smile and we had a fun conversation. When my sister, Helen was dying Susanne was in ICU and she got me through some rough times. She sure was a woman anyone could love. If I wasn’t down here with Dean, I’d be able to give you the biggest hug. Our sincerest condolences to you, your sons and all your extended family. You are most certainly in our thoughts and prayers. Dear Glenda and family. Susanne and I go way back – from when she first graduated and started work at JPM. We worked countless shifts together on Paeds, back in the day, and more recently in CCU. She was smart, dedicated and a blessing to those patients that were lucky enough to have her as their nurse. Susanne was always ready to help others with a smile, and it was always great fun to connect and have a chat. At work, in the parking lot of JPM, at Walmart, or online. Please accept my condolences. Rest in peace Susie Q.

Glenda,Darren &Daniel. It’s taken me almost a week to try and write this I’m still so shocked about Susanne’s passing. I just can’t wrap my head around it. From training together, living together, working together Sus was with me. We shared an abundance of memories. She introduced me to my husband stood by me when we married, was there when my boys were born and she watched them grow up. She always would ask how they were whenever we spoke. Although the past years we haven’t seen a lot of each other it was known that the other would be there if we needed them. I can’t believe that won’t be the case anymore. I’m sending my sincere condolences to you all. They say memories will help you heal. I can only hope that is true. RIP Sus.
