September 1, 2021 at 7:21 pmI was only a little girl when I first met “Mr. Pinsent” at the Co-op when my mother started work there. He was the kindest man with the biggest smile. The last time I saw him, about 2 months ago, he still had that beautiful bright smile and the kindest heart. Sending my deepest condolences to Gloria and family. You definitely have an angel watching over you now.

September 2, 2021 at 5:06 pmI was so sorry to hear of Melvin’s passing,
On my own behalf and also on behalf of the Board and staff of the NL Federation of Co-operatives (NLFC) and co-operators across the province, I offer sincere condolences to his wife Gloria, his children Kimberley, Todd and Keri, and to all his family and circle of friends.
I had the distinct privilege to get to know Melvin through our involvement in the co-operative movement. I was a Director on the Board of the Federation and Melvin was Manager of the Clarenville Area Consumer’s Co-operative. Melvin not only attended annual meetings of the Federation but also many Co-op Atlantic meetings. Consequently, he was well known by many co-operators, particularly those involved in the consumer co-op sector, as the steady, quiet, unassuming, competent and likeable Manager of the Clarenville store!
I can’t recall the exact number of years he worked at the co-op but I do recall that he began as a box boy and worked his way up to be its Manager for many years. Melvin was not just a manager of a grocery store; he was a Manager of a co-operative business. He not only understood the co-operative principles and values but practiced them everyday in his management style. He had the utmost respect and appreciation for the member-owners who entered the building everyday while, at the same time, understanding and fully supporting the role of his Board of Directors.
I feel quite fortunate to have had the opportunity to get to meet and know Melvin Pinsent. I had the pleasure of being in his presence several times and never once without that firm handshake and that friendly, engaging and welcoming smile.
Rest in peace, Melvin, and thank you for your service to your co-op and to the greater co-op movement in NL.
