Ada Grace (Warr) Janes May 1, 1936 - July 22, 2026

Ada Grace (Warr) Janes passed away peacefully in her 90^th year on July 22, 2026 at Valley Vista Seniors’ Complex in Springdale, Newfoundland.

She leaves to mourn her sisters-in-law Reta and June, her ‘like a sister’ Cassie, as well as a number of well-loved nephews and nieces.

Ada was predeceased by her husband John (Jack) Janes, her parents Reginald and Genevra Warr, her brothers George (Edna), Kevin (Hazel) & Garnet; her sisters Phyllis (George Dixon) & Marjorie (Roy Billard); parents-in-law Henry and Louise Janes; sisters-in-law Vera (Bob) Meenan, Violetta Babs (Gary) Ivany; brothers-in-law George Janes & Roger (Olive) Janes.

Ada grew up in Springdale and finished high school there.  She studied Commercial in St. John’s and upon graduating became secretary to the Dean of Education at MUN.  While there she met Jack, they married in 1957 and completed each other for over 65 years.  Jack’s career with CN and later Marine Atlantic called for travel but for a number of years home base was St. John’s.  Later Ada and he made a permanent move to Riverview, NB.

Ada was a homemaker supreme.  She always said her life in Riverview was charmed – idyllic-like, entertaining friends, attending church, walking daily, driving on errands in her tiny peagreen Volkswagen and lavishing love on Buttons, her long-lived cat.  She also volunteered many hours of assistance caring for a lovely invalid lady who lived nearby in Riverview.

After Jack’s retirement in the 1990s, they spent winters in Clearwater, FL.  They had many friends with whom they swam, played cards and attended many social functions at their Bay Aristocrat Village clubhouse. They spent summers in Clarenville at their retirement home built by Jack.   It was during these years that Ada’s brother Garnet and his wife June shared a close relationship that carried on until life’s end.

Ada’s later years in Clarenville were blessed.  Their special neighbours Brenda and Paul Soper became a surrogate family bringing Jack and her hot meals and generally helping them in every way possible.  Ada’s last years there and in Springdale saw deep memory loss but she retained her love of walking and an overall pleasant and contented disposition often accompanied by a warm smile.  May she rest in peace.

Deep acknowledgement is given to the nursing staffs of Clarenville Retirement Center, Golden Heights Manor, Bonavista and particularly to Valley Vista Long Term Home, Springdale where she was shown remarkable patience and care daily.

Sadie Thistle, Jack’s cousin, remained close to Ada through visits, correspondence, gifts and phone calls during her last years.  Dianne Clarke gave unselfishly of her time since Ada moved to Valley Vista to become her special ‘angel of mercy’.  Dr. Todd Young, your compassion and concern facilitated a comforting passage of time to Ada’s latter years.  Thank you.

A committal service will be held at a later date in Clarenville.
