Passed peacefully away on Monday April 11, 2022 at the Salvation Army Glenbrook Lodge Long Term Care Facility, St. John’s, after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s, Wesley Gregory Manning, formerly of North Harbour & Harbour Buffett, aged 85 years.
Predeceased by his wife Inez and parents John and Eliza Manning.
Leaving to mourn with countless wonderful memories, his beloved children: Randy (Carol), Scott (Diane), and Dana; grandchildren Rhea Dale (Aaron), Daniel Manning (Erin) and Jaiden Manning; great grandchildren, Eliza, Nathaniel, Isaac, Lincoln, Elias, Jonah, and Annie; sister Iris Collett (Wally) and brother John Manning; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.
Wes, as he was known, spent a long life in North Harbour, Placentia Bay. He started work there as a school teacher at the age of 16. He enjoyed a long career in education in a two room school house in North Harbour and moved on to Principal of Swift Current Academy. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. Wes was member of the Local Lions Club, the Harbour Authority, Bethel United Church, and a volunteer wherever needed. Wes’ presence in the community was well known. Alzheimer’s took away his ability to remain in his home after the death of his wife Inez in 2017. It was with sadness he left the home and friends he had known for over 60 years.
Wes appreciated the outdoors, time spent with family and friends, and his time out in boat, fishing. He crafted many projects for friends and family. He loved to pick berries in season.
A celebration of the life of Wesley Manning will take place at Bethel United Church, North Harbour, Placentia Bay. Visitation will take place at his home church, Bethel United on Wednesday, April 13th at 10:00 am-1:00 pm. Visitation will be followed by a funeral service at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Alzheimer Society of Newfoundland and Labrador.
To honour Wes’ memory, please share a kind gesture with someone in need, or jig a cod, split and dry a fish and savour life’s simple pleasures.
To encapsulate the life that Wes enjoyed in his later years, here is a poem from Robert Dawe, “Swing on Birches.”
‘Swing on Birches’
Robert Dawe
When Frost was “weary of considerations
and life was too much like a pathless woods,”
he’d dream of swinging birches.
My retirement gives me too a chance
To leave behind the rush, the driven din behind,
To “swing” a birch, or split a spruce
And smell the essence of the pastoral woods.
It gives me occasion to walk again,
Taking my own sweet time;
To savour the sparkle of a brook in spring,
Swans in a lake (Wes would have preferred turrs in the harbour),
Children on a swing,
Kelp embroidering a wrinkled beach.
To retire is to hear the pitapat of rain against a cellar roof,
To grow a drill of carrots;
To jig a cod, to cure it, and place it on a flake to dry
For Christmas with sweetbread.
I need space to dabble,
To putter with a trellis
And coax a honeysuckle to coil between its laths.
I need time to light a fire beside a pond
And brew some tea made hot with blasty boughs.
I need, at night, to put some bread in soak for brewis.
I need to pick some bakeapples in a marsh,
Or Topsail herts for jam.
Yes, I need to “Swing on Birches” now;
Just get away from the bells and phones and all that baggage
Which tugs at us and leaves us sluggish and humdrum.
Be young again and coltish;
Learn to trot, but no more racing after schedules and clocks.
Endeavor to court my lovely wife again
To share the love
That vital spark that radiates the candle flame
And sets the meal of life aglow.
