Passed peacefully away at the Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on February 19th, 2026, Wayne D. Slade of Arnold’s Cove, originally Spencer’s Cove, at the age of 81 years.
Predeceased by infant son, parents Captain Nathanial and Effie Slade, parents-in-law Captain Fred and Sarah Eddy,
Left with a lifetime of fond and loving memories, his wife of 57 years, Linda, and children, Blair (Jill) and Mark (Jolene), and grandchildren, Ella, Claire, Paige, and Katie; sisters Ruby (Frank dec) Slade, Sandra (Edgar dec) Warren, Dawna Slade (Wally dec), Sisters-in-law Kay Eddy, Joan (Joe) Cavaco; brothers Max (Vera), Ira (Linda Aubin), and Brother-in-Law Max Eddy (Sherry).
Adopted as an infant, he maintained close ties with his stepsiblings and was grateful for them.
Predeceased by biological mother Mabel Masters, stepfather Jim Masters, and stepbrother Terry Masters (Melina Benson).
Left with fond and loving memories are stepsisters Beverly (James dec) Dougherty, Elaine Swyers, Jane Ann Masters (Frank Green), and Monique (Kevin Wareham), along with stepbrothers Ken (Kay) Masters and James (Clarice) Masters; dearest lifelong friend, Tony Ryan; numerous nephews and nieces, who he held close to his heart, as well as cousins, friends and work colleagues, all cherished relationships from which he drew great meaning and value.
His love of people and life on the water led him to a career as a marine engineer. One that spanned over 60 years, covering all points of the globe, touching many lives along the way. He was a man of faith who believed in a higher power and held an unwavering trust in people. He believed that individuals would choose to do what is right by considering others before themselves, all while maintaining a sense of modesty.
An excerpt from an Ella Wheeler Wilcox poem was often found with an accompanying sketch on a scrap of paper tucked away in a pile or pinned to the cabin wall.
“One ship sails East,
And another West,
By the self-same winds that blow,
‘Tis the set of the sails
And not the gales,
That tells the way we go.”
The family wishes to thank Dr. Douglas Skirving and the staff at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital Palliative Care Centre for their compassion and comfort during his brief stay.
Cremation to take place with a celebration of life to be held at a later date.
