Verlie Anita Mills December 12, 1929 - June 17, 2021

Verlie A. Mills of Shoal Harbour passed peacefully away at G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital on June 17th 2021, at the age of 91 years, with her beloved sister Lorna by her side. Predeceased by her father and mother, Edward and Eliza Clench, and sister Audrey, and the father of her daughters, Tom Mills.

Leaving to mourn six daughters: Lois (Rex), Marlene (Al), Cindy (Lloyd), Angela, April (Herb), and Madonna (Gary), as well as ten grandchildren: Tonya (Chris), Andrew (Sharon), Travis (Tanya), Jessica, Samantha (Glenn), Lucas (Lorilee), Amanda (Darcy), Amy, Joey, and Katie, and twelve great-grandchildren: Andrew, Ryan, Sydney, Brooke, Ashton, Harrison, Annalee, Hunter, Maya, Alora, Jude, and Layla.

Also leaving to mourn, her sisters Lorna Lambert (Gord), Sharon Mills (Gord), and brother Oscar Clench (Joyce), nieces and nephews, honorary family members Ewart Hall, Kay Atkinson, and Reverend Brian Hannon, and a wide circle of family and friends in Shoal Harbour and around the world.

Verlie was like a mother to all who knew her. She was a lifelong volunteer who gave tirelessly to her community. She served as a 4-H leader and CGIT Leader, she was a member of the Clarenville Legion Ladies Auxiliary, the Twin Town Seniors Club, the United Church Women, the Rebekahs, and the Shoal Harbour United Church Board of Stewards. She organized the annual Christmas Eve Vesper Service and welcomed any and all who wanted to be involved. She was a successful business woman, and while her official role was owner of Harbourview Groceteria, aka “The Store”, she served as an unofficial counsellor, banker, doctor, and community worker to any and all in need. She always had room for one more in her home and at her table, and she made sure that each person felt welcomed, valued, and loved.

Thank you to the many doctors, nurses, and homecare workers who provided exceptional care and compassion to our beloved mother and grandmother.  Special thanks to homecare workers Eileen, Bev, Caroline, and Jody, the nurses at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, and to Dr. Harold Crewe, Dr. Paul Soloman, and Dr. Frank O’Dea, who all went above and beyond in their care of our mother and our entire family.

A Memorial Service for Verlie will be held at 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, August 6, 2022 at Shoal Harbour United Church.

To the family, your mother was a wonderful woman that always had a big beautiful smile. Each time Donna and myself made a visit with her she made me feel so welcome. The very first time I met her was about 53 years ago and we had a great chat. That was the day she informed me that we were.related. My grandmother was Marnie Clench and your mom told me she was her fathers sister. Which made her Verlies aunt.. she said that meant we must be kissing cousins at least.
I want you to know that I admired your mom and I have made sure that all my family and friends knew what a wonderful woman she was. She will be missed a great deal by a great number of people.
Please accept my condolences for your very great loss.

Madonna and all the Mills Family…….my condolences to you all on the loss of your mother, and a great lady. Verlie was one of the first people I got to know when I moved to Shoal Hr. Every morning at approximately 9:50, often accompanied by a pre-school Samantha, she would stop in to check the mail on her way to open the store. For a while, hers was the only face I could put a name to. That smile and brief mid-morning chat always brightened my day. Visits to the store were always a treat too, with that same warm welcoming smile. She truly was the ‘first lady’ of Shoal Hr. as everyone always spoke so highly of her. It was my great pleasure to have know her, and always, when I think of my time in Shoal Hr., you can rest assured, Verlie is in my thoughts. Again my condolences to you all on the your loss

All my dear cousins, the passing of your dear mother brings great sorrow and wonderful memories. Verlie wasn’t just a cousin, she to all our family and extended family was a strong, outgoing, vibrant individual who excelled in her love for her family both near and far, Her doors were always open, you were welcomed, felt nothing but exuberant comfort, a lunch was on the table immediately, you were offered a place to stay. My memories of our visits go back to 1954, and the countless visits ever since were all the same. Verlie lived a long and prosperous life, the love of her girls kept her spirits up regardless of circumstances she faced. Love you all, keep well and God Bless, Bob and Family.

Thinking of you all. Verlie was such a loving lady. I have so so many fond memories of going in the store on the way to school and back. She was always there with kind loving words if we needed them, and even if we didn’t! How many times did I tie up my skates on the step going into the store. Not once did she shoo me away. Sending so much love to the family missing her today.

It is difficult to find the right words to adequately convey the sense of loss that I feel on Verlie’s passing.

She was simply the kindest , most welcoming and understanding person that you’d ever want to meet.

I hold the memory of each and every visit with her as a jewel and comfort.

Her official obituary says it right :
“Verlie was like a mother to all who knew her.”
