Emma, Chris, Susan and families, my condolences on the loss of a very special man. Mr A, as I always referred to him as, was one of the kindest and most gentle men a person could ever meet. Mr A has surely left a very positive mark in my life as an educator, neighbour and definitely a good friend. I will truly miss our chats and his always upbeat attitude, followed up with a smile. Our community and families share in your grief. Take refuge in knowing how one man has made such a positive impact on so many generations. His words of wisdom and encouragement will carry me through a lifetime. Rest in peace Mr A.

Sending our deepest, heartfelt condolences to you all. I am so saddened to hear of Melvin’s passing.
Melvin ( always Mr. Abbott to me) was a remarkable teacher and was a very positive role model for me. He was a very caring and compassionate teacher, always patient and kind. He was one of my favourite teachers and I was very privileged to have had him as a teacher and also have the opportunity to work with him at Clarenville High. After his retirement, whenever, I chanced to meet him, he always chatted with my husband and I. May you find comfort in your many memories in the days ahead.

Our hearts are heavy with the loss of a good man who we were proud to call our friend. If we needed anything, Melv was always there to lend a hand or give support. He had such a quiet manner but fierce loyalty to his family and friends. We are so very sad we are away and cannot be there to celebrate his life. Our thoughts are with you all and may the lifetime of memories you shared help ease your sorrow.

I was very lucky to have known and been helped by Mr. Abbott while playing softball as a kid. I was then very fortunate to have him as a teacher in grade 9. I was then honoured to work and learn again from him for 4 years, many years later in the auto industry. I know everyone who met him feels the same as I do that he was a man of pure character with a heart full of kindness and compassion. He did so much selflessly for so many. We have truly lost a great man, teacher, and friend.

We are saddened today to hear of Mel’s passing. He was a cherished friend, a respected teaching colleague, and true inspiration to his many students at Clarenville High.. We have met occasionally since we both retired from teaching, usually at soccer games of our grandchildren, and we always had a grand chat. Mel will be fondly remembered by all who were privileged to have known him.
    Blessings to you all,

I have no words right now to express my sorrow at this news. During my years at Clarenville Hight (1986-89), he was my grade 9 teacher, but so much more than that. He was my confidante whom I would talk to about everything going on: all the heartaches of my teenage life as well as the joys and successes. He walked with me in the grand march at my graduation, and there was truly nobody else on the planet I would have wanted to walk with me more. I missed many busses at the end of the school day because I would be in his classroom chatting. He was never too busy for me and never made me feel like there was something else he should be doing at that time. The world has lost a beautiful soul. RIP to a sweet angel.

My condolences to Emmie, Susan, Christopher and family. So sorry to hear about your loss of Melv. I reflected upon the many wonderful conversations Melv and myself had over the years. Melv taught me the importance of researching our history in order to understand the present. I’ll never forget our many conversations regarding NFLD demographic trends and patterns. Mel had a way of making you think about a topic and then rushing out to learn more about that topic. He was a true teacher.
