Llewellyn Joseph Baker September 10, 1940 - September 20, 2026

Passed away peacefully at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville on Sunday September 20, 2026, Llewellyn Joseph Baker of Come by Chance at 86 years of age.

Predeceased by his wife Catherine (nee Barry), sons Duane and Andrew, parents John and Emila Baker (nee Loder), sister Olive Coffin, brothers-in-law Albert Coffin, Merle Strong, Cyril, Kevin, Edward and Gerard Barry and Wayne Bussey, sisters-in-law Eileen Bussey and Patricia Barry, nephews Chris Bussey and Jonathon Breckon and very special friend Iris Adams.

Left with fond and loving memories are his sisters, Voilet Strong, Ruby Ball (Norm) and brother George (Pam). Sister-in-law Ann Breckon. Brothers-in-law Eugene and John Barry (Sandra) . Children, Barry (Sherry), Sharon Slade (Ralph), Paul (Roxanne), Graham (Angela), Michael, Joann and Nadine. Grandchildren, Tiffany (Andrew Hickey), Kyle (Claire), Dylan, Nathan, Deidre, Sarah Clarke (Trevor), Patrick (Victoria), Luke (Maddie), Courtnee, Zach, Brittany, Jordan (Davon) and Alyssa, as well as recently welcomed to our family, Emily and Jacob. Great grandchildren, Ethan, James, Sophia, Jackson, Elliya, Lyla, Elanya and Laura. Boathouse buddies, Paul Anthony, Keith Best, Rex Benson and a large circle of family and friends which included his colleagues from the GB Cross X-Ray department who he still met with regularly.

The family would like to thank Dr. Desmond Whalen , Dr. Shirin Javanparast and all the wonderful staff at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital for the care and kindness shown to Dad and the family during his hospitalization.

Resting at St. Paul’s Anglican Church, Come by Chance on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 7-9 pm and Thursday, September 24, 2026 at 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm.  Funeral Service will take place on Friday, September 25, 2026 at 2:00 pm with internment to follow at the interfaith Cemetery.

His career started early. After grade 11 he started teaching in Burgoyne’s Cove. Later, he taught in Harbour Buffett where he met his loving wife, Catherine from Port Royal. They then moved to St. John’s, where he did his training at the General Hospital and started his family. After 3 children, they moved to Come by Chance where he worked at Walwyn Cottage Hospital and raised his 9 children. In 1985 he became Manager of the X-Ray Department at Dr. G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital and worked there until his retirement in 1995.

Lew was known for many things. He was the best storyteller and loved to share his knowledge and experiences of his younger days with all his family and friends, especially at our many family get togethers or at his boathouse. He was a talented accordion player where he loved playing traditional music. He shared that love of music with his friends and family.

His true passion was his love for boats. He started building them as early as his mid 20’s and continued throughout his life. His trips to Port Royal and Haystack on the Ruse au Rue and Penney Five were where he created so of his happiest memories.

If you find yourself free at 3 pm on any given day, pour yourself a glass of scotch (with a tiny pinch of water) in memory of Lew’s boathouse happy hour.

Lew had a wonderful life. He created so many precious memories for his friends and family to carry with them.
