Passed away peacefully at Dr. Albert O’Mahony Memorial Manor, Clarenville on January 28, 2024, Jessie Marie Newbury (née Goodyear) of Carmanville, aged 90 years.
Jessie is predeceased by her husband Rev. Neil Newbury, parents Captain John and Merab Goodyear, brothers Maxwell (Triffie), Jack (Janet), Douglas (Phyllis), son-in-law Carl and daughter-in-law Sandra. Left with fond memories are her children, Debbie, Daniel (Rhonda), David (JoAnn), Grandchildren; Michael, John, Jason (Ashlee), Kristen (Mike), Joshua (Judy), Sarah, Skylar, along with a large circle of nieces, nephews, and friends.
Jessie was a dedicated educator who earned her Bachelor of Arts in Education from Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador while balancing her teaching career and raising her three children—David, Debbie, and Daniel—with the unwavering support of her husband, Rev. R. Neil Newbury. After retiring from teaching, she continued her lifelong commitment to learning by attending summer school for several years. She was later recognized as a Lay Pastoral Minister by The United Church of Canada and served in Summerford, Lower Island Cove, and Heart’s Content. Upon her official retirement, Jessie and Neil settled in St. John’s, cherishing their time together surrounded by family and friends, traveling, and dividing their time between their homes in St. John’s and Carmanville. She found great joy in gardening, pickling, and, most of all, spending summers at her beloved Carmanville home. In recent years, Jessie resided in Clarenville, close to her daughter Debbie.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff, nurses, and physicians at both the Protective Care Unit and Dr. Albert O’Mahony Manor in Clarenville for their compassionate care and support during Jessie’s time there.
Resting at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville, on Sunday, February 2nd, from 2:00–4:00 PM and 7:00–9:00 PM. A funeral service will be held at Memorial United Church, Clarenville on Monday, February 3rd, at 2:00 PM. Interment will take place at the United Church Cemetery, Carmanville South, on Tuesday, February 4th, at 2:00 PM.
Throughout her life, Jessie gave generously to causes close to her heart, including the church, children’s charities, education initiatives, humanitarian causes, animal welfare organizations, and much more. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in Jessie’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville.

January 30, 2025 at 9:43 pmSincere condolences to the Newberry family. Rev .Newberry ‘s dad was my minister back in New Melbourne when I was just a young boy. After completing my university studies I found a teaching position at Donald C. Jamieson academy where I worked with your mom for many years. As a young adult your mom mentored to me with her quiet disposition and guided me through my early years of teaching. In a strange twist of faith I attended Calvary United in Creston and Rev. Newbery was our family minister who baptized both of our sons. So we have had a connection with the Newberry family for about sixty years. May God grant Jessie eternal rest with her late husband and may they be reunited in the arms of their Lord.

Knowing that she is in a wonderful place, reunited with Uncle Neil, as well as the many wonderful memories of times spent together as a family, will hopefully ease some of the sorry you feel at this time. We so enjoyed our visits with them on our return trips back home over the years as well as their visits to N.B. Your Mother was an inspiration to many of our generation because of her high standards, her faith and her firm belief in continuous learning. RIP Aunt Jessie

February 2, 2025 at 9:36 pmDebbie, Danny, David and families. Thinking of you in your time of sorrow. I’m writing on behalf of myself and Mom (Kathleen Newbury) Mom and Aunt Jessie were more than sister in laws, they were best friends. They had all lived together for a while while the 2 husband’s Neil and Ambrose went to college to become the men of God that they were. Mom and I have so many fond memories of Aunt Jessie and Uncle Neil. The ones that stand out in my mind were the month of camping we always did every summer! The days go by so quickly and we all get old but the memories we have are amazing! You were all so good to your Mom and loved her like you should have till the end. Good bye Aunt Jessie, I’ll see you when the time comes ❤
