Irving Stead
1940 – 2020
Donald Irving (Irv) Stead passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 12, 2020 at the Dr. Albert O’Mahoney Care home in Clarenville, NL. He will be remembered fondly by his wife of 61 years, Eva (nee Chatman), sons Craig and Terry (Pam), grandchildren Miranda (Ryan) and Amy (Dan), mother Louise, sister Betty (Clarence) and brothers-in law Harvey (Barb) and Herder (Norma). He was a gentle giant to a slew of nieces and nephews who are also going to miss “Uncle Irv”.
Irv was born and raised in Musgravetown where he graduated High School. He worked for several forestry companies, AND, Price-Abitibi and Labrador Linerboard which took him to Goose Bay in 1972. His experience and skills led to a brief stint with the Manitoba Government from 1977-80 as a forestry consultant. Irv returned home and bought the Imperial Oil franchise in Clarenville which he ran for 13 years. He finished his working career by cooking for various fly-in fishing camps and Cougar Construction. He was an avid fly fisherman and loved to be out on the river “havin’ a flick”. Catching the wiley Atlantic salmon was the highlight of his year.
Irv will be remembered as a big man with a big heart.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Dr. G B Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville or Heritage United Church, Musgravetown.Due to Covid-19, a memorial service will take place at a later date.

November 15, 2020 at 1:14 pmSincere Condolences to Aunt Lou, Eva, Terry, Craig and all the family. It is a sad weekend for sure. I have lost a cousin and a very good friend. He was a friend to everyone who new him and he would help anyone. He certainly loved Salmon fishing, and I had the pleasure of spending many hours on the river with him over the years. While his memory was not great in recent years, he always knew us whenever we visited him.

November 15, 2020 at 11:01 pmEva, Craig, Terry and extended family. We are saddened to hear about the passing of your loving husband, dad and granddad. A giant with a gentle heart could barely describe him. We have many fond memories of your dad during his time in Goose Bay. Our friendship extended way beyond Goose Bay as we often visited you all in Musgravetown. We speak of you all often and talk of all the fun times we had. Memories will never fade. He thought very highly and loved you all and we know because of his disease he could not get better. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Rest in peace my friend. Love and Hugs from Blanche and Max

November 16, 2020 at 8:20 pmI’m so sorry to hear of Irv’s passing. He was a gentle giant! I remember one February my grandmother Alice Gould (nee Prince) stayed with them. My favourite memory of him was when he was surrounded by Eva’s doll collection and he said, “whatever makes my love happy”. It was hilarious to see this giant man surrounded by the frills and dolls. He loved Eva to bits! My condolences to you the Steads and family. Send my love to Eva. xoxo
