Ethel Nina Guy June 24, 1934 - October 5, 2025

Ethel Nina Guy (nee Reid) of Arnold’s Cove, NL, passed away on October 4, 2025, as peacefully and as beautifully as she lived, at the age of 91.

Born to Henry and Eva Reid (nee Masters) in Fair Haven, NL (or Famish Cove as she would always point out) on June 24, 1934 (Discovery Day, “The day she got discovered. ”)

As a young lady she moved to Arnold’s Cove in service and met the absolute love of her life, Hubert, son of Mark and Martha Jessie Guy. Together, they raised two sons Gerald Ralph and Garry Hubert. Her love and nurture were a constant in their home. Those same qualities were then realized when the next generation-the grandchildren came along. From playing board games, helping with homework, to preparing a fine lunch, her patience and nurturing presence were endless.

Ethel was well-known for her beautiful penmanship and eloquent writing. Friends and family from all over the world would love to receive her beautiful hand-written letters. She was the matriarch that preserved close-knit family ties. Her love for each member of her family—from siblings to nieces and nephews, and even dear friends—was evident. She made everyone feel special, just as she was deeply cherished by them.

Ethel’s success in life was evidenced by the many prestigious titles held during her long life: these included Wife, Mother, Nan, Gram-ma, Sister, Home-maker, Keeper of Tradition, Eternal Optimist, Confident, Listener, and Friend.

Ethel is predeceased by her parents Henry and Eva Reid, her husband Hubert Guy, her brother Ralph, infant great-grandson Noah Bailey, and many other special family and friends — too many to mention, though dear to her.

Leaving to cherish her memory, and grateful for her life: her sons Gerald (Elaine) Garry (Pauline); Grandchildren , Trina (“Robbie”), Derek (Betty), Trudy (Philip), Dwayne (Krista) and her “Little girl called Wandalee”; her “girlies,” great-granddaughters Alyia, Jayme, Hannah and Courtney. They often were bounced on her knee as she sang “’Deed I am in love with you!”; her siblings Grace Hollett, Alex Reid, Ada Fairchild and Kerr Reid; beloved Sister-In-Law Doris Burt, A large circle of extended family and many friends.

Her final years were spent at The Hilltop Manor Arnold’s Cove, and St. Patrick’s Mercy Home, St. John’s, where, once again, she shared her love, positivity and genuine happiness with anyone involved in her care and company. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to all who contributed to her care and comfort.

Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Fewer’s Funeral Home. Visitation will take place at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Arnold’s Cove, NL, Wednesday, October 8, 2025. Family gathering 3:00 to 5:00 pm, Public gathering 6:00 to 9:00 pm. Funeral service at St. Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church, Arnold’s Cove, NL, Thursday, October 9, 2025 at 2:00 pm, Interment to follow at Arnold’s Cove Inter-faith Cemetery.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear that Ethel had passed away over the weekend. After coming into work this morning and seeing that we had Therapeutic Choir, my first thought was that I had to tell her there would be music today. It was always lovely to see her attend the music programs and watch/listen to her sing. Ethel would light up the room as she sang every word. She always had a smile on her face and was such a pleasant lady to be around. The beautiful words used here in her obituary describe perfectly the sweet lady we got to see everyday. Sending heartfelt condolences to you all during this difficult time.
    Rest in peace, Ethel.

    To Ethel’s family members,
I was shocked and saddened to learn of Ethel’s death. I volunteer in Pastoral Care at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home and always very much enjoyed my visits with Ethel. She was a beautiful lady, so peaceful, loving,
reflective, welcoming, accepting, and she possessed the most beautiful smile. I always left her room feeling a little more at peace with the world myself. May she rest now forever in the presence of her Lord whose she loved.
