Charlene Butt August 1, 1957 - May 17, 2025

Charlene Jane Butt died peacefully after a short illness on May 17, 2025 at G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville in her 68th year.

Born with Down’s Syndrome in St. John’s on August 1, 1957, Charlene was the youngest daughter of Betty and Charles Butt and beloved sister of Yvonne (Godfrey). Charlene enjoyed attending the Vera Perlin School in St. John’s until her parents retired and moved the family to Musgravetown.  Charlene lived an extraordinarily long life, loving her family, pets and friends, as she frequently said, “with all my heart”. She adored getting hugs, listening to music, dancing, reading and writing poetry, watching soap operas; she delighted in the occasional glass of wine or beer, relished impishly hiding any and all scented hand lotions or lip balms to keep for herself, and cherished her collection of angels given to her by friends and family. She was a participant in the Newfoundland and Labrador Special Olympics in bowling, and before arthritis limited her mobility, Charlene loved to enjoy a coffee (or several) in the company of others at local coffee shops or at “Gather”.  Perhaps more than anything Charlene loved being celebrated on her birthday – no sooner would one birthday pass that she would look forward to the next.

Charlene is predeceased by both her parents, her sister and her dear brother-in-law (Peter Godfrey), and will be remembered with great fondness by her two nieces, Robyn Godfrey-Marks (Darren) of Stratford, ON, and Lt. Col. Dianne Godfrey-White (Dennis) of Ottawa, ON as well as their children, Gareth, Beatrice and Grace.  Many other extended family and friends in the Clarenville and Musgravetown areas will also remember Charlene with a smile, including her two sisters-in-law, Jennifer and Brenda Godfrey, of Musgravetown. Robyn and Dianne also wish to express the utmost gratitude to Charlene’s companions from Total Care for their devotion and compassion.

Cremation has taken place, and funeral arrangements are being made and will be shared with friends and family at a Celebration of Life at Charlene’s home, 3P Trinity Place, on Tuesday May 27 from 6-8pm. Charlene will be laid to rest alongside her parents in the United Church Cemetery in Musgravetown.  In lieu of flowers, Robyn and Dianne respectfully ask that donations in Charlene’s memory be made to the Vera Perlin Society in St. John’s, or to the Newfoundland and Labrador Down’s Syndrome Society.

“Grace was in all her steps, heaven in her eye.” – John Milton

Robyn and Dianne and families. We were sorry to hear that Charlene had passed away. we knew that she has not been well. The last time that we saw her was at your mothers funeral. She was always a special cousin and she was always excited to see me and Ivy. We are currently in Kelowna BC and will not be returning until Tuesday, so we may not be able to attend her celebration of life.

I had the pleasure of meeting Charlene a while ago. I enjoyed every time I spent time with her, she was so funny and sweet. I remember one occasion she was wearing a plastic tiara, and she was so pleased, acting like the queen she was.

I hadn’t seen her in several years and was very sorry to hear of her passing. She truly brought light and love to this earth, and she’ll be sorely missed.

May her memory be a blessing for us all.
