It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Myrna Greening, age 61, of Terra Nova. Myrna was a beloved daughter, sister, aunt, and mother to her fur babies. She passed away peacefully at the Miller Center on March 16, after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer.
Predeceased by her parents Donald & Molly Greening, sister Cathy Greening and niece Kallie Greening.
Leaving to mourn with fond memories, her siblings: Barb (Ed), Terry (Bunny), Don Jr., Arlene (Dave) and Neil (Isaias); nieces and nephews: Lesley, Kerry, Kristopher, Kaitlin, Justin, Tracey, Mitchell, Nicole and Nathan; as well as a large extended family and her great nieces and great nephews whom she loved dearly, and they loved her equally in return.
Myrna was a very kind and thoughtful person. She loved her dogs: Holly, Oscar, Odie and Riley. She loved the outdoors, especially her time in Terra Nova and in her Garden of Hope. Myrna was a talented knitter and crocheter and spent much of her time creating beautiful and cozy hats, mittens, socks and slippers. Each one was a piece of art. She recently began teaching herself to play piano and discovered a natural talent for music.
Myrna cherished her close friendships with Mary and Herb Greening, Mary and Brian Felkar, Sacha Compagna and Dr. Nigel Duguid for their love and support over the years. Special thanks to Myrna’s breast cancer ‘sistas’ in her SOS (Sharing Our Strength) support group and her metastatic support group SHE (Sharing Hoping Empowering). Deepest appreciation to all the health care professionals who took such good care of her at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Centre, especially Dr. Joy McCarthy for her kindness and compassion.
Visitation will take place at the Holy Trinity United Church in Terra Nova on Sunday March 19 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm and 7:00pm – 9:00pm. Funeral Service will take place on Monday, March 20 at 2:00pm at the Holy Trinity United Church with interment to follow at the United Cemetery, Terra Nova. Donations will be graciously accepted to the Holy Trinity United Church in Terra Nova.

March 17, 2023 at 3:19 pmTo Neil and your wonderful family, I am so sorry to hear of Myrna’s passing. She was and will forever be loved so much by all of your family and she was always gracious and kind to me. I can only imagine how much you will miss her company. Her sense of humour made me laugh and her devotion to her animals will always inspire me to do more. I hold in my heart the love she gave to my favourite Shih Tzu, Holly Wolly Greening. I am glad to be one of the lucky ones to have known her and am thrilled to have pieces of her crocheting to remember her. I’m wishing you the best of love and support during the hardest of times. March 19, 2023 at 8:45 pmSo sorry to hear of Myrna’s passing. I was just thinking of her the other day because I remembered her birthday was early March. We did hang out a bit when we were growing up together in Terra Nova-maybe even did some fishing together. Again, so sad to hear this news.

March 17, 2023 at 8:38 pmWe are so sorry for your loss. We will miss meeting up with Myrna in Terra Nova. She was part of the fabric (the wool!) of Terra Nova.
Her strength and endurance is an inspiration. We would all do well to take a lesson from her — when the rains are incessant, find your best raincoat and don’t cower or tremble in the sideways torrents.
Myrna is sure to be sitting around the table with your family in Heaven right now, all enjoying Molly’s delicious spread, quietly slipping the dogs a little treat.

March 18, 2023 at 10:45 amSincerest condolences to Neil and the Greening family:
Myrna will be fondly remembered for her steadfastness and her appreciation of life’s simple pleasures.
I got to know Myrna better in recent years participating in the Run For The Cure in St. John’s, and walking the loop with her in Terra Nova. Most of the time, though, I felt like I was in a race to catch up with her! (Definitely a gold medal race walker!) I’ve never known anyone as determined. She would often say to me, even when life was smacking her from all sides, “Every day is a good day.” I admire her true appreciation of each new, unfolding day.
The cancer was a terrible fate, but it changed her perspective and approach to life. After her diagnosis, you may have noticed Myrna came out of her shell, so to speak. For example, she started listening to and enjoying Neil’s taste in music! One time, Neil made me a “mixed tape” on a thumb drive, but sent it via Myrna. It took at least 4 months before she passed it over to me, begrudgingly.
Another time, she saw a poster decided I should join her in a Red Shoe Walk around TN occurring in 2 hour’s time. I asked her if she knew anyone signing up.
“You,” she said with a smile.
While visiting at her Mt. Pearl deck overlooking her Garden of Hope, she talked fondly of her nieces and nephews and the grands. She was so proud of you all. (It reminded me of Mr. Greening’s faithful support of the Janeway Telethon.) She also spoke of appreciation for meals dropped off to her by family and friends, and of her wish for Neil to return home. Her wish was granted and it was one of her greatest comforts, enabling her to better navigate the pandemic.
Terra Nova will seem lonelier for me now that we won’t be walking the loop together. I’ll be sure to think of her fondly when passing the Greening homestead.
Myrna lived life on her own terms and I think if she were to live it a second time, she would do it in much the same way, but open a dog shelter in her house for Shih-Tzus!
Much love, Vera

March 18, 2023 at 1:09 pmDeepest sympathy to Myrna’s family.
I have fond childhood memories of being friends with Myrna. I remember the first time I met her, back when we were five or six years old as she jumped from a small boat after a little ride on the Terra Nova River. I was pleased to learn that a new family had recently moved to Terra Nova (a rare event in the tiny village), complete with a girl my age.
I have good memories of playing at recess times and going to a nearby store with our nickels or dimes to buy small treats. Also, Myrna and Cathy were my Hallowe’en buddies. I can see us now as we walked around the place, three young girls with sweaty plastic masks moved to the tops of our heads between houses, plastic pumpkins in hand for treats doled out only after the various mothers had guessed who we were.
My best memories are from visits to the Greening home, where I was always warmly welcomed by her parents, and usually fed a snack or a meal made by her mother, who was a fabulous cook. If fresh bread had just been taken from the oven, we were offered that as well. Mmmm. We played indoors and out, games like hide and seek, Monopoly, and ones we made up, with her other family members often joining in. Being with Myrna and the Greening family was an important part of my childhood in Terra Nova.
May she rest in peace.

March 19, 2023 at 5:53 pmI want to send my condolence to Myrna’s family. I remember the first time I met Myrna at our son and daughter-in-laws cabin in Terra Nova. She was so kind and I enjoyed chatting with her. I also remember meeting her mom and dad at their home and was made to feel so welcomed. Myrna was so talented in her knitting. I have a beautiful hat that she knitted and was given as a gift by our son and daughter-in-law. Our daughter who lives in BC also has one. She had a positive attitude and I felt so good when I saw her. She will be missed in Terra Nova and also in St. John’s. The picture of her and her dogs is so beautiful Her smile brings so much to my thoughts of her. I will think and pray for her and her family.

March 20, 2023 at 1:48 pmI’ve known Myrna through our breast cancer journey. I was only talking to her less than a month ago at the Cancer Center. We had a chuckle the summer when her brother thought that I had wig but it was my real hair. Such a sweet person. May she rest in peace. Hugs to all of her family❤❤

March 22, 2023 at 2:15 amTo Myrna’s Family:
My condolence on Myrna’s passing. I first met Myrna, through my work, in the early 1990’s and our mutual connection to Terra Nova and surrounding communities developed into a long lasting friendship. She was the consummate professional medical office secretary who was kind and respectful to everyone she came in contact.
From the beginning Myrna faced her illness with hope and strength and to the end she remained courageous as she journeyed through it, in her own quiet way. I will miss her sense of humour, our phone conversations and over the past couple of years, with COVID restrictions, visiting in her garden and on her doorstep.
Rest in Peace my Friend.
