With broken hearts, we announce the passing of our dear Mark Battcock, who passed away peacefully in the early morning of Sunday, January 28, 2024, in the arms of his wife and mother. He was in his 40th year.
Welcoming him with open arms are grandparents John and Helen Battcock, Aunt Joanne Juteau and father-in-law Joe Costigan.
Mark leaves behind his daughter Josie, his true reflection, whom he loved beyond measure. His spark and love of life will live on through her. He leaves behind his loving wife of 11 years Debbie who was his rock, especially these past few months, and he, the love of her life for almost 19 years. He was the devoted and cherished son of his parents Diane and Bill Seaward and Brian Battcock and Jill Dollimount. Mark also leaves to mourn his loss his little brother and confidant Nick and sister-in-law Jessica; grandparents Fred & Geraldine Miller and Ron & Margaret Seaward ; mother-in-law Deb Costigan; sisters-in-law Laura and MaryBeth Costigan; aunts and uncles Sharon & Doug King, Fred & Tina Miller, Phonse Miller, Terry Battcock & Dionne Moores, John Battcock, Donald & Janet Battcock; his brudders, little buddies, and a large circle of family, friends and colleagues.
Mark grew up in St. John’s and Mount Pearl, but found his place to call home in Clarenville, where he had great pride in his community. He was a dedicated member of the Clarenville Lions Club for 5 years where he served as membership chair.
The sea ran through Mark’s veins and he was a sailor to his core. In his 18 year career, he consistently brought morale to every vessel he sailed on. He was a highly respected crew member and everyone wanted him on their hitch. Mark always dreamed about the opportunity to sail around the world. We are grateful he was able to fulfill this wish on his final sail aboard the MV Asterix.
Mark was the life of the party and was one of the funniest people around. He lit up a room when he walked into it and had an uncanny way of making everyone who was there feel like they were part of his inner circle. With his bright, gentle manner, he formed instant bonds with every child he met. Mark was kind, considerate and generous and the world will be a duller place without him in it.
The family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many healthcare professionals who guided us and supported us over these challenging months – our family physicians Dr. Jackie Elliott and Dr Daniel Rees; the staff at GB Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville , and those at the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mark’s memory to the Cancer Care Foundation NL Patient and Family Support Fund or a charity of one’s choice.
Visitation to take place from Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville on Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 1-4 and 7-9 P.M. and Friday, February 2, 2024 from 10:30 A.M. to noon. Memorial service to take place from Fewer’s Memorial Chapel, Clarenville, Friday, February 2, 2024 at 2:00 P.M.

I started on board the M/V Asterix the same day as Mark, we had an instant camaraderie as the new guys and became good friends, both very excited about our new positions. He had this innate ability to light up a break room with smiles and laughter every time he was in it.

It is unfair that this beautiful man has left us so soon but he leaves behind a warm and highly cherished legacy of love of family and stout Newfoundland pride . I think we knew a long time ago that Mark was destined for a seagoing career and he more than lived up to his own expectations and pursuit of his dreams. We will miss him dearly but his starboard light will shine in perpetuity. Mark——May you Rest In Peace now and forever. We now have the watch.
