Passed peacefully away at the Health Sciences Center, St. John’s, Jonas Elwood Newhook of Arnold’s Cove, age 76 years. Predeceased by his wife Rosalind Newhook (Oliver), parents Jacob and Charlotte Newhook; siblings Raymond Smith, Jacob Newhook, Una Smith (Bill), Melvin Newhook (Flo), Florence Newhook (Alex), Calvin Smith, Robert Newhook, Art Newhook (Martha), Lewis Newhook (Sandy), Sheila Newhook, friend Ralph Hollett (Barbra) and his loyal companion – his dog Shadow. He will be fondly remembered by his extended family – Maxine Slade (Harvey), Yvonne Loder (Leeland), Ewart Oliver (Sandra)and by Dawn Howell who although wasn’t family was there for Jonas in his time of need. He was a man of integrity and honor. He was a hard worker with a marvelous memory, especially for Home Hardware SKU numbers. He was a man who lived and appreciated life, who loved to laugh and was rarely seen without a smile, certainly by his friends. He loved music though couldn’t hold a note himself. He enjoyed snowmobiling, boating, anything that involved being around people. When he was at his cabin everyone was welcome and they were made feel like family. He enjoyed his scotch and had a love affair withfood with nothing going to waste. His saying was “best before confederation”. Dessert for Lunch was yogurt, Dinner’s dessert was ice cream or ice cream and pie. Before opening Newhook’s Home Hardware in Arnold’s Cove with his brother Melvin, Jonas worked for General Electric in Ontario which is where he met his wife Rosalind. Over the years he was on the board for the BDC, AACC, and was a Director for Home Hardware International.

May 24, 2022 at 11:46 amMy sincere condolences to Brad and family. Jonas was a special person. I enjoyed working for him at Home Hardware while I lived in Arnold’s Cove. When Lloyd passed Jonas drove to town on a wet foggy night to give his respect it is something that I really appreciate. Unfortunately I’m not able to do the same for him but my thoughts are about him today. RIP Jonas

May 24, 2022 at 11:16 pmBradley, I don’t know how to sum up your dad other to say his passing feels like the end of an era. I don’t say that to be dismal, only that he seemed a little bit legendary in a way. Larger than life in a way. Very kind and generous and always cheerful. There when you needed him, when it counted. I know he enjoyed life and that makes me smile. I hope it makes you smile too. Thinking about you and all your dad’s family and friends. xoxo

May 25, 2022 at 8:32 pmMy condolences to all of Jonas’ Family & Friends. He was the most caring & loving human being. After his illness (stroke) in Nov. of 2019, I heard him say a # of times that he had 74 good years…so accepting! He worked for 56 & a few months of those 74 & said that he’d do it all, again. Always said that he had fun & I have no doubt about that! Myself, Dawn & Frances (for the 9 months that she was with him) in the past 2 & 1/2 years, tried our best to get him well, again, but that was not to be, even with him being so accepting & positive. R.I.P. – You were one of the best & will be terribly missed – Sweet Dreams
