Passed peacefully away at the G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital, Clarenville, on 25 March 2026,
Joan Tilley of Clarenville aged 98 years.
Predeceased by her husband Aaron Tilley and brother James Munro.

Joan was born in Eriboll, Sutherland, Scotland, on the 25th of July, 1927 to Hugh and Georgina
(MacKay) Munro. After completing her schooling she worked as a bank teller in
Golspie, Scotland, and it was there that she met her future husband.
Aaron Tilley was with the Newfoundland Overseas Forestry Unit stationed in that area and
happened to go into the bank to cash his cheque. When he saw Joan working there he said to
his buddy, Larry Gladney, ”that’s the girl I’m going to marry”. They were married on the 28th of
December 1945 and returned to Clarenville in April of 1946 with hundreds of other NOFU
members and their War Brides.
After raising her children Joan became involved in several local community groups including the
Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxiliary, Red Cross, Girl Guides, and Church groups. She also
worked with the CNT as a telephone operator and later sold Real Estate.
She was an avid gardener and in her later years spent many hours watching the birds at her
feeders. She was also a wonderful cook and baker, a trait she passed on to all her girls, Jim not
so much. Her shortbread recipe with the Scottish Thistle will live on.
Cremation has taken place.
Visitation will be at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Clarenville 2-4 and 7-9 on Monday, 30 March, with

Jim,Joy and Family My condolences.I never met your mother, but I feel I knew her. She was courageous and strong. To leave family and home to cross the Atlantic to a new family of strangers not able to run home to mum for the lad she loved that takes courage. To settle and raise a growing family in a strange land take strength. She knew her native poet. I am sure jim did not learn his burns at school she was loving. The love you’ve shown her is a reflection of the love she gave you so yes I think I knew her. You are blessed to have her and she was blessed to have you. With affection, Tony.
