Passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 20, 2021, following a brief illness with her family by her side, and in the house in which she was born, Jean Burden of Clarenville, age 90 years. Predeceased by her husband Ralph (2000), daughter-in-law Carol (2000), siblings Rhoda, Ethel, Jim, Hazel, Phyllis and Geraldine. Leaving to cherish a lifetime of love and memories five children: Wayne Burden, Jeanne Sali (Richard), Beverley Richard (Guy), Alan Burden (Valerie) and Gerri Burden (Trevor Fradsham); nine grandchildren John Burden, Marc Richard (Megan and expected 1st great grandchild), Luke Richard (Jennifer), Evan Richard, AJ Burden, Sara Burden, Rebecca Sali (Adam), Erin Sali and Robyn Sali; sister Evangeline Snelgrove (Earl), brother-in-law Obediah Burt, sister-in-law Marigold Burden (Charlie), brother-in-law Milton Burden (Margie); special best friend Muriel Rodway; numerous nieces and nephews; and friends.
Mom was a fiercely proud Newfoundlander who lived a lifetime of community service to the Clarenville hockey and figure skating community. She was a long term presenter of the Elizabeth Swan trophy presented annually in memory of her close friend. She was equally as active with Air Cadet League of Canada as well as the local Legion. She held numerous executive positions including becoming the first female president of Branch 27. Her enthusiasm for veterans, hockey and curling could only be matched by her enthusiasm for knitting – 70 years or more for family, friends, and numerous charities- Special Olympics, hospital auxiliary, NICU St. John’s to note a few. There wasn’t a knitting pattern she couldn’t follow or a knitting request denied.
Her knitting needles now silent. Rest easy Mom.

July 21, 2021 at 12:04 amSo sorry to hear of Jean’s passing. She was a great lady and a visionary builder in the community. She worked along side our Mom, Elizabeth Swan, founding the Flying Blades Figure Skating Club, volunteered with Clarenville Athletic Association and was a much loved leader with Air Cadets. Mom and Jean loved their cup of tea and when they travelled to Regional meetings there was always a portable kettle in one of their suitcases. Our thoughts are with Wayne, Jeannie, Beverley, Alan and Gerri at this time, and share both the sense of loss and the wonderful memories. Jean was a very special lady and will be sadly missed.

July 21, 2021 at 10:52 amLearning this morning of the sudden passing of my old and dear friend brought back so many wonderful memories of Jean and her husband Ralph. Over the years, I spent many nights with them in Clarenville during my time involved with figure skating in Newfoundland. Just a few short months ago, I spoke with Jean who told me she would knit me one or two pair of slippers to give me as she planned on coming to St. John’s for our figure skating reunion in the fall of 2021. Hard to believe this wonderful lady who I first met when I was a teenager in the mid 1960s in St. Andrew’s, NB is no longer with us. My sincere condolences to all of Jean’s family and many friends she made during her lifetime. She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
