On this day heaven has gained another angel. Irene Howell, formerly from Garden Cove, passed away peacefully at the Lions Manor in Placentia at the age of 87. Irene was born and raised in Best’s Harbour on Tacks Beach, Placentia Bay. She had many stories of life, the good and the hard times. Irene had a sharp memory, she was able to recall hundreds of names and birthdays of family & friends in the community. She married the love of her life John Howell, on August 12,1957 at the Garden Cove United Church. Irene loved the community of family and many friends. She was a kind and loving soul devoting her time to the church. She was an active member of the choir for many years. Her involvement with the UCW was the highlight of her life. She loved socializing and visiting the sick & elderly, not only in Garden Cove, but in the surrounding communities. Irene’s favourite passion was catching trout with her son Derrick. They walked through the marshy fields to many ponds, her favourite being the mountain hill where she landed dozens of trout with her bamboo pole. Irene blessed everyone during her long life with her kind and nurturing spirit. She will be missed dearly but never forgotten.
