Gordon Maxwell Avery “Max”, 86, died peacefully Tuesday October 11th, 2022, at Dr G.B Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville with his wife & son at his side.
He was born on December 27th, 1936, in Long Beach, NL to Edgar & Victoria (nee Green) Avery. At a young age he begun his career working in the Newfoundland logging industry. His stories of the logging industry always revolved around the hard & difficult work. Although difficult, he remarked that he certainly preferred that work to fishing, which at the time employed most of his family. As fortunes had it, he was able to move on from the logging industry into the mining industry, moving to Labrador City a few years after the town’s inception. Here he would become an equipment operator, driving service trucks for the Iron Ore Company of Canada. In Labrador City he and his wife Leonie raised two sons, Kerry and Gord. After a 32-year career at IOC he retired and moved back to Newfoundland, settling in the small town of Queens Cove, in South-West Arm, close to his birthplace. Eventually after many years of peaceful retirement, Max & Leonie moved to Clarenville.
He will be remembered as a man who loved the outdoors, spending much of his free time in Labrador City at his cabin on Shabogamo with his family & friends. When outdoors he enjoyed hunting & fishing. He was also fond of Moose hunting, and even when he became unable to hunt himself, he loved accompanying Leonie when she hunted. He also loved talking to & having a glass of whiskey with his friends and family, enjoying every second of a house visit or a phone call. His love of the outdoors and conversation was matched only by the love for his wife, children & grandchildren.
Max is survived by his wife Leonie (nee Martin) and son Kerry (Catherine) and daughter-in-law Cheryl. He also leaves behind grandsons Jack, Garath & Connor. As well as his sister Eileen Whalen and sister-in-law Eileen Avery.
He is predeceased by his parents Edgar and Victoria; his beloved son Gordon Avery, along with his siblings Mary (Will) Vey, Jehu Avery, Elsie (Bill) Blundon, Edith (Clifford) Stringer, Ella Avery, Annie Avery, Marguerite (Velmore) Balsom, Thomas Avery, & Lewis Avery; brother-in-law Eldon Whalen.
Also mourning his loss are the many nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Max”. He will be dearly missed by all friends & family who were fortunate enough to be a part of his life.
Cremation has take place and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

October 12, 2022 at 5:04 pmSo sorry to here of your fathers passing. I remember him always being around the house and at the cabin when we were being nothing but a pain in the butt. He would give the big deep growl and we would scatter while hearing him giggling after he said it. I remember him as such a big man but with a heart of gold who would grab the gas can out of the shed and top up all the skidoo’s before we left the door. Sorry for yours and your Moms loss and know that I’m thinking of you both.
