It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Eldred Clarence Howell of Clarenville (originally Garden Cove) at GB Cross Memorial Hospital on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, at the age of 87 years.
Predeceased by his loving wife of 41 years, Hazel, his parents Isaac and Emily, brothers Earl, John (Irene), sister Edna (Bill).
Leaving to mourn with the most loving memories his beloved daughters Bonnie (Jeff) and Diane, sons Earl (Kelly) and Glenn (Kim), cherished grandchildren Meghan (Andrew), Joshua and Zachary, his companion Myra, along with a circle of extended family and friends.
Eldred lived in Gander and worked with Newfoundland Telephone Company before retiring back to his hometown of Garden Cove. Eldred deeply loved his family, was quick to lend a hand to his neighbors and considered his friends an extension to his own family.
Eldred had an infectious laugh that would fill a room, he was quick to crack a joke, always had a smile on his face and never spoke an ill word against anyone. He greatly enjoyed spending time outdoors, especially in the woods moose hunting or out on the water.
His loved ones will miss his commanding but gentle presence, his warm, loving hugs and the way he always made sure those he loved most in life were taken care of.
Cremation has already taken place. A celebration of life ceremony will take place at the United Church in Garden Cove on a date to be announced.
The family would like to thank the staff at Cozy Quarters for his care over the past number of years, and the doctors, nurses and staff of GB Cross Memorial Hospital. In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made in Eldred’s memory to the Alzheimer Society, Dr. H Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation or a charity of one’s choosing.
“Goodbyes are not forever, are not the end; it simply means I’ll miss you until we meet again.”

July 28, 2025 at 5:29 pmSo sorry to hear of Eldred’s passing. He was such a wonderful next door neighbor when he lived on Old Mill Rd, and enjoyed his visits when he would drop by after leaving here. He was always so pleasant, and ready with a hug. I’m sure he will be greatly missed, and my thoughts and prayers go to his family. With sincere sympathy, Lois and Mike.
