Earl Gower Lockyer December 4, 1925 - August 24, 2025

Earl was born on Jean de Gaunt Island, Placentia Bay to parents Joseph & Jessie (Green) Lockyer. His siblings were Myrtle, Benjamin, Heman, and Susan. In 1944 he married Winnie Hapgood of Tacks Beach, which he said was the prettiest girl he had ever seen. They had four children, Cyril (Nina), Berkley (Margaret), Calvin (Olive) and Judy (Gerard). They were blessed with grandchildren, Sheina (Darrell) Knowlton, Sherry (Larry) Purdy, Joe (Lisa) Lockyer, Jason (Laura) Lockyer: 7 great grandchildren & 6 Great great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, special niece Donna & George Trowbridge, and sister-in law Rowena Hapgood.

He was an avid carpenter, building his first house when he was 19, and as the saying goes, “could put an arse in a cat”. He built many beautiful pieces of furniture that we still cherish.

He worked on the oceans from the age of 9. He worked inshore fishing with his uncle when his dad died, worked on a Norwegian Whaler when he was 14, bank fishing in a dory when he was 18, an engineer on schooners, and as an able seaman with the federal government.

During WWll he was a merchant mariner doing convoy duties.

Dad loved his family above all else. A highlight of his life was a trip across Europe with four generations of his family, visiting the battlefields of Europe, when he was 93 yrs old.

He was loved and respected by his family. He will be so missed.

Now he is reunited with his beautiful wife of 73 yrs and his two sons, Berkley and Cyril.

A special thank you to the management and staff of Hilltop Manor in Arnold’s cove, where he spent a year. You  certainly are the best.

A life well lived, Rest easy thou good and faithful servant.

As per his wishes, there will be no visitation, but a graveside service will be held at St. Andrews Anglican Cemetery, Sunnyside on Wednesday, August 27, at 2:00 pm. All are welcome.
