January 30, 2021 at 6:42 pmBernard was a GREAT man. There doesn’t exist on this planet many like him, if any.
He was a craftsman, carpenter, welder and built, plumbed, did all the electrical in his house without any help except a book he ordered in the mail.
He helped build roads and infrastructure all around Newfoundland.
He built boats with a master boat builder in Nova Scotia.
He LOVED to hunt and fish and told me thousands of stories about coming back to the government wharf in Sweet Bay before the others were even going out!
His memoirs were a passion project that I had him start because his stories were too good to end at my ears.
I’ve suffered loss after loss these past few years, but certainly wasn’t prepared for how this one hit me.
I joked with him often that he was being greedy living for 92 years. He would laugh and pretend he was going to kick me…lol
I was raised partially by my Poppa Dominic who was born the same year. I think that’s part of the reason we bonded so beautifully.
We depended on each other. With my kids so far away, he gave me someone to love and take care of.
Newfoundland lost a treasure this week. So did I.
I love you all and want to remind you to spend time with elderly people whenever you can because they hold stories and teachings that you’ll not find in a book or even on the internet.

January 30, 2021 at 8:30 pmHeather, Sharon, Ronnie & families,
We were so sorry to hear about your fathers passing. I was very fond of your dad & mom, ever since I was a little girl, and would visit Sweet Bay in the summers. I remember one summer, myself & Heather helped him drying squid…. He was always a very hard worker and a wonderful husband & father, who was adored by Helena, as he adored her. The last time we visited Sweet Bay, we took him to the store and all he wanted was a custard cone… for his little dog.
Our mom, Geraldine (Maloney) Sheppard sends her condolences also.
Rest In Peace Bernard!
