June 9, 2020 at 4:44 pmWhen Ron & I take our drives around Port Blandford, we always joke and call ourselves Sid & Edith. We would even meet them at times and stop to have a chat. It seemed like the both of them would go on forever and I hope Ron and I, are half as lucky to be together as long as they were. Sid is going to be oh so missed by oh so many people. Every-time we’d meet we’d make a joke and have a laugh about something and if there was anything on the go that he could attend – he did. A great man, community, supporter, army vet, legionnaire and so much more. You will live on forever in the history of many. Our hearts go out to Edith and all the families – you were soooo lucky to have Sid as part of your lives.

June 9, 2020 at 5:47 pmEdith and family: So sorry to hear of Sid’s passing. I hadn’t seen him for years but I visited him when he was in hospital in St. John’s last time. He looked so much like Aunt Jane and Uncle Jack. I know that Mom and Dad (Annie and Ernest Pretty) loved your visits to their home in Gambo. Sid lived a long life and you have many memories to keep him close to you. May God be with you and bless you. Love and prayers for all.

June 12, 2020 at 1:23 pmFor Edith and the Mathews Family –
I write to express to you and your family the sincere condolences of the Patricias on the passing of Sidney Mathews. I cannot say I ever met Sid, for of course his years in the PPCLI predated mine by a generation, but his obituary and the other condolences tell me I missed meeting a fine man. We are happy as well that he was active in a veteran’s organization after his service.
Canada and the Regiment remember Lance Corporal Sid Mathew’s service, both in Korea, and later in Germany, and you and your family should be proud of that service. His name will be read in this year’s list of the lost when we read that list out this November in the Scared Space in Beechwood, the National Military Cemetery, Ottawa. His name will also be listed in the 2020 edition of the Patrician’s Last Post section.
Thank you for obviously supporting Sid after his service – 64 years of marriage is a wonderful achievement. We are glad that he had a vibrant family and a good life after the army. His obituary certainly says so.
We hope you and your family can remember Sid fondly as a soldier as well as a husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, great grandfather and great-great-grandfather. Thank you all.
Brigadier-General Vince Kennedy (Retired)
Colonel of the Regiment
