Walter Francis “Junior” Maidment August 27, 1960 - October 6, 2025

Surrounded by family, it is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Junior Maidment at the Palliative Care Unit at St. Patrick’s Mercy Home on October 6, 2025.

He will be forever missed by the light of his life, his son Mitchell, his wife Sandra, brothers Bill (Rona) of Clarenville, Wayne (Flo) of Bridgewater, NS, sisters Donna (David Hayes) of St. John’s and Dianna (Barry White) of Dartmouth, NS, sisters in law, Michelle Racine, Kellie (Kevin Pardy), brothers in law, Wade and Brad (Vanessa).  He also leaves behind nephews: Terry, Greg, Michael, Travis and Josh; nieces: Virginia, Jenna, Summer and Molly, 5 great nephews, 1 great great nephew and 2 great nieces, as well as many cousins and great friends.

Junior was predeceased by his parents Walter and Frances Maidment, sister Juanita, nephew Nicholas, and mother and father in law Michael and Laura Cheeseman.

Junior worked in the Electrical Sales field his whole career and enjoyed the many friends and acquaintances he made along the way. Although he was an avid lover of all sports, the Philadelphia Flyers and the Philadelphia Eagles were his favourite teams. He had a wealth of knowledge of everything sports, like none other. When his son Mitchell came along, he was thrilled to share his love of sports with him.  Junior and Mitchell spent countless hours at the hockey arena during the winter months, where Mitchell made Junior a very proud hockey dad.  And during the summer, they took their love of sports to the ball fields and golf courses to share many games.

As Junior was battling the last few years of his illness and unable to attend any of his beloved events, Mitchell spent numerous hours with him watching their favourite sports teams on TV. These times were most important to Junior.

The family would like to thank his “family” at St. Patrick’s Home, who cared for him so well during his stay. Just to mention a few of the wonderful people who cared for him: Amanda, Colleen, Mary, and Katie, you lit up his life every day and we will be forever grateful. His smile gave us so much peace to know he was so content.  A special thank you to his lifelong friends Rod Butler, Kenny Penney and Don Greening for your many visits. Junior enjoyed the reminiscing of many funny stories from their childhood and teenage years.  Thank you to Dr. Squarey for her continued care of Junior during the 15 years of his illness.

Visitation will be held at Barrett’s Funeral home, 73 Commonweath Avenue, Mt. Pearl from 7 – 9 pm on Thursday, October 9th and Fewer’s Funeral home, 299 Memorial Drive, Clarenville from 10:30 am to 12:30 on October 10th. A service will follow visitation at Fewer’s Memorial Chapel at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Parkinsons Society or Stella’s Circle.

I am so sad about our loss of Uncle Junior. Although I have spent more than half of my life living away from home and subsequently getting less time to spend with Uncle Junior over the past 20 years I will never forget what he did for me during my early development years.

I started playing hockey at age 8 and up until the time I moved away from home at 16, Uncle Junior was always there to not only watch me play but take me all around town to my practices and games. He was often up early on weekend mornings to take me to Fieldian Gardens for 6 and 7 AM when he never had an obligation to do so. That’s the Uncle Junior I know. He loved sports and he loved supporting those he loved in their sports endeavours. But I also think that he did to help my mom either get a break from the terror that was me or simply help me put on my goalie pads and tie my skates.

Sometimes during that time I had the chance to sleep at his and Sandra’s place the night before hockey. It was always a treat to spend more time with him. We would play baseball or hockey video games, watch the Stanley cup playoffs (particularly 95,96, and 97), and I would get to learn so much from the ultimate sports encyclopedia that was Uncle Junior. It was everything Philly.

Uncle Junior, I’ll never forget the role you played in my life. You were a great uncle who any little boy would have been lucky to have. I am so sorry I can’t be there but the memory of you and our times together will always remain in my heart.
