“Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure.”
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the quiet passing of Percy John Hiscock, at the age of 91, on September 12th, 2023 at Golden Heights Manor Nursing Home.
Percy was born on Cowards Island, Bonavista Bay, NL to the late Job and Maude (Sampson) Hiscock. It was here that he developed his love of the ocean, fishing and island life that he carried with him through the years. He always had a story about a schooner being built, a storm he was caught in on the sea or the number of cod that was brought in by someone’s net. He spent most of his working life in the salt cod industry and in his spare time could often be found working in the garden or snaring rabbits. He was also quite handy, and even well up into his 80’s, was known to help out the neighbors; whether fixing a roof, building a store, installing a window or just shoveling a bit of snow, Percy was always around. A good stiff drink or cold beer was payment enough!
He will be deeply missed by his wife, Ruth (Blundon) Hiscock whom he married 67 years ago as of September 12. He also leaves behind to mourn, sons, Owen of New Maryland, NB and Clyde (Patsy) of Catalina, NL; son-in-law, Dan Blackmore of Port Union, NL; grandchildren, Lori Barton (Ben) of Rusagonis, NB and Steven Hiscock (Tiffany McPhee) of Clarenville, NL; great grandchildren, Amber, Emily, Ayla and Jaylen; brother, Eddie (Deanne) of Catalina, NL; sister, Bessie Hodder of New Harbour, NL as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, long time friends and extended family.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Joy Blackmore; brother, Luke and sister, Faith Manuel.
The family gratefully acknowledges the kindness and care that was given to Percy over the last few years at Clarenville Retirement Centre and they especially want to thank the team at Golden Heights for making his last few days, back in his beloved Bonavista Bay, good ones. They also want to express their gratitude to those of you who have visited Percy and for the many kind deeds you have done for the family.
Visitation will be held at Fewer’s Funeral Home, 299 Memorial Drive, Clarenville, NL on Thursday, September 14th, 2023 from 1 – 5 pm and on Friday, September 15th, 2023 from 10am – 12pm. The funeral service will be held at St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Clarenville, NL on Friday, September 15th, 2023 at 2:00 pm. Rev. Robert C. Oldford will officiate. Interment will follow in the Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery.
