It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Maxwell Benjamin Stanford; a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, cousin and friend. How blessed we were to spend your last days with you at the Health Science Centre, St. Johns NL, surrounding you with our love.
Predeceased by his mother, Ellen Stanford (nee Giles) his father, Benjamin Stanford, Brother, Josiah Stanford, Mother-in-law, Nellie Watton (nee Penney), Father-in-law, Ira Watton. Max leaves behind a family who will forever cherish his memory.
Those mourning his loss include his devoted, loving wife and “best buddy” of 55 years, Marcie Stanford (nee Watton). His beloved children, Todd Stanford (Trudy), Cindy Murray (Greg). He also leaves behind his precious grandchildren, Christopher, Paige and Ethan. His sisters, Myrtle LeBlanc and Sharon Jacobs (Alvin). As well as many nieces and nephews and extended family.
Max retired from The Come By Chance Oil Refinery in 2008 and lived his retirement to the fullest. He loved spending time in the outdoors; cutting firewood, taking quad rides, enjoying a “boil up” and spending time with family and friends. He was always there to lend a hand to anyone who needed it. He was a devoted Christian and gave endless amounts of time to his church and church family, whom he loved dearly. For many years, he played and sang in church and different kinds of outreach ministry. He was a small man in stature but was surely known for his big, beautiful, voice.
Max’s humor, quick whit and devoted support will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and countless people he inspired throughout his life.
We wish to express our gratitude to all the Doctors and Nurses, both at G.B Cross Memorial Hospital (Clarenville) and the Health Science Centre (St. John’s), who showed us so much kindness during his time there. The compassion you showed our family will never be forgotten. Thank you as well to Fewer’s Funeral Home (Clarenville) for guiding us through this difficult time.
Resting at Fewer’s Funeral Home (Clarenville). The family will receive visitors on Wednesday, April 9th; 2-4pm and 7-9pm. A Celebration of life will be held 2:00 pm on Thursday, April 10th at Calvary Pentecostal Church (Clarenville), followed by burial at Clarenville Interdenominational Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the CNIB.
As we often sang at his bedside:
“What a day that will be, when my Jesus I shall see. When I look upon his face, the one who saved me by his grace. When he takes me by the hand, leads me through the promised land. What a day, glorious day, that will be”.
Rest peacefully it the arms of Jesus now.
We will love you forever.

April 8, 2025 at 5:39 pmUncle Max was a man of quiet strength and deep faith. He played a huge role in inspiring my love for music and worship, and I’ll always treasure the memory of us playing “God on the Mountain” together. His life left a mark on mine, and I’m grateful for every moment we shared.
Wishing peace and comfort to all who loved him. He will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.

April 9, 2025 at 4:31 pmTo Marcie, Todd, Cindy and Families,
Again, deepest condolences, love and prayers from Al & Myself on your great loss.
As a child growing up in North Harbour, my brother Max was always my protector—always looking out for me. Being 10 years younger, I’m certain that I was often a nuisance to him. But he ‘never’ made me feel that way—quite the opposite.
I’ll share a favourite childhood memory of my dear brother Max:
I had not long started attending School. This one day, it suddenly began to rain, very hard. This was before our family owned a vehicle. The School day ended, and as I went to step outside to walk home, there was Max. He was sitting upon our old horse Ned, waiting for me, and holding my raincoat.
Max was a wonderful brother to me throughout the years, and I told him so many
times—but not often enough!
My brother had a very kind and gentle nature. He also had an extremely strong passion for his faith in God, and for his Family.
Max & Marcie were the first in our Family to become Christians. They were very influential in Al & Myself coming to know Christ some forty years ago.
The good news today is, my dear bro is safe in Heaven, and I’ll see him again!
Blessings to All.
