Ivan Wiseman September 18, 1951 - July 6, 2023

Following a brief period in hospital, Ivan Charles Wiseman passed away peacefully in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on July 6, 2023, with family by his side.

Born on September 18, 1951, Ivan was raised in Bloomfield, NL, by loving parents Willis and Eva Wiseman.  He was a proud Newfoundlander who found joy in the simple things:  time with family; helping out a friend or neighbour; working on his excavator; sawing logs; having a good meal of fish-n-brewis; and, most of all, being “Pop” to his five grandchildren.  Ivan was a lifelong learner and enjoyed finding unique approaches to problems.  He was always keen to chat about global politics. After many years of operating his own businesses, he began teaching Heavy Equipment and completed his adult teaching certificate at the Memorial University of Newfoundland.  Until retiring in 2019, Ivan was an instructor at the College of the North Atlantic where he took great pride in teaching and joking with his students.

After a lifetime of hard work, Ivan’s final years were filled with laughter as he retired near family in Nova Scotia.  Rain or snow, Ivan spent every moment he could working at the sawmill with his eldest son, Mark, or offering up his excavator skills to family, friends and neighbours. He proudly watched photo/video updates from his three grandchildren out West (Maddie, Emme and Lexi), laughed for hours at tales told by grandson Noah, and watched every single hockey practice and game of grandson Colin.  When not spending his evenings catching up with family and friends back home, he was entertaining a couple of baloney-loving cats, Lew-Lew and Winston.

Ivan was predeceased by infant daughter, Wendy Patricia; siblings, Edith Young (Hubert), Dorothy “Doll” Snow (Harris), Wilfred “Wilf” (Sheila); and parents, Willis Wiseman and Eva Wiseman/Dominey. He leaves behind his three beloved sons, Mark (Sarah, Noah & Colin, New Glasgow, NS), Paul (Annette, Maddie & Emme, Okotoks, AB), and John (Mariah, Lexi, Lethbridge, AB); special niece Eva Ash (Dave, Kyle); sister, Effie Skeffington (Alvin); brothers, Lewis (Lydia); Winston (Pam); former spouse, Louise Wiseman (Fort McMurray, AB); dear friend Georgina House; and a large circle of extended family and friends on the Point and beyond.

Visitation will be held at Fewer’s Funeral Home in Lethbridge on Thursday, July 13th  from 2-4 and 7 – 9 p.m. with funeral to be held at the Salvation Army in Musgravetown at 2:00 on Friday, July 14th.  A small, informal celebration of his life will also be held in Nova Scotia on July 16th, details to follow.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ivan’s memory to the Anthony Paddon School Breakfast Program.

Funeral to be held at the Salvation Army in Musgravetown at 2:00 on Friday, July 14th.

Many memories of Ive, especially the many times he helped me with his heavy equipment and operating knowledge and abilities, also when I built my house on Bunyscove Rd. he helped me shingle it. We had so many laughs together and just plain ole good times. He will always hold a cherished place in my memory. My sincere condolences to all his family, sorry I couldn’t be there at this time but rest assured my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Ivan was a great friend and we shared many laughs. We worked together in Bonavista and communicated on a regular basis following his retirement. I wish to remember him for all the laughs we shared. He got me back into eating pea soup and taking Ivan out to a restaurant was always an adventure. Every time he had a good meal he would ask if the cook was married. I finally said to him one day, if you say that today I am walking out! So he promised he would be good. We had a nice meal and was about to leave when he said he had to go back. Not trusting him completely I listened at the door. Sure enough, he asked if the cook was married but this time he added – “cause me buddy out there was asking.”

Few weeks later I got him back. He asked me to deliver something to him at Lethbridge and he showed up with his lady friend. So I told her I had something important to share, when they came over I told her she could have done a whole lot better for herself rather than settle for that fellow. Not sure he ever forgave me lol but he frequently reminded me of what I said and had a good laugh at it.

I will surely miss my good friend!!

Thank you so much for the story. Ivan was my uncle (Dad #2) he told me the story of his good buddy who told his lady friend she could have done better. We had a laugh as always when I assured him I agreed with his buddy.
