It is with great sadness but peace that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend Bernard Joseph Murphy in his 84th year.
Born in St. John’s, but after a few moves with his wife Cecilia and five children along the way, Bern eventually ended up making Clarenville home.
His entrepreneurial spirit saw him managing the Royal Garage in Clarenville for many years, opening a restaurant “Murphy’s” and eventually building three commercial buildings in Clarenville which his children have continued with to this day.
Bern retired with his beautiful wife Cecilia and lived out their dream of spending winters in Florida where they enjoyed great times with friends and yearly vacations with all the children. Dad’s greatest joy was his grandchildren who he would make crack up with laughter and could never say no to anything! He was larger than life in so many ways yet loved just spending time with his family.
Leaving to mourn with the best memories, wife of sixty years Cecilia, children, Bernard Murphy Jr., (Alice), Rod Murphy, Chris Murphy (Jennifer), Marg Wells (Joe), Lori Peddle (Junior), grandchildren, Dawn (Byron), Bernard (Crystal), Sydney (Daan), Benjamin, Emma, Allison, Mark and great grandchildren, Adon, Cameron, Brianna and Jack. Sister, Agnes Howell (Frank).
Sisters and brothers in law Francis McPherson (Gordon), Pat Hagerty (Doreen), Jim Hagerty (Maureen), Tom Hagerty (Bonnie), Gerald Hagerty (Lorraine), Leo Hagerty (Lillian), Veronica Cline (Clint), John Hagerty (Donna), Mary Fields (Larry), Isabelle Hagerty, Madonna Hagerty (Tony); many nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends.
Predeceased by his parents Edward and Margaret Murphy and wife’s parents Patrick and Margaret Hagerty, infant son Leo Murphy, sisters Helen Fanning (Cyril), Elizabeth Molloy (Luke), sister in law Peggy Bennett (Ches).
A very special thanks to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff at Doctor G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital in Clarenville. Your care and treatment of Dad was second to none.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bern’s life will be held at Our Lady Of Fatima Parish, Clarenville on Thursday August 14th at 2 p.m. All are welcome. If you wish, donations may be made to Our Lady of Fatima bldg fund.
Dad, a little part of you lives on in each and every one of us. You’re only in the next room, still cheering us all on. Rest in God’s loving arms.
A Silent Tear
Just close your eyes and you will see
All the memories that you have of me
Just sit and relax and you will find
I’m really still there inside your mind.
Don’t cry for me now I’m gone
For I am in the land of song
There is no pain, there is no fear
So dry away that silent tear
Don’t think of me in the dark and cold
For here I am, no longer old
I’m in that place that’s filled with love
Known to you all, as “up above”

August 10, 2025 at 10:26 pmAunt Cecilia , Bern Jr , Rod , Chris , Marg , Lori and all of his beautiful grandchildren we send you our love, prayers, and condolences on the passing of Uncle Bern .
There are so many wonderful memories and stories we have of our Uncle Bern. Our Dad ( Jim ) has told me of many great times they had with Aunt Cecilia and Uncle Bern . Having a few swallies together in some watering hole anywhere in Nfld or dropping into our summer home in Colliers with camper in tow and a big feed to be had . We went to Goose Bay one year when we were kids and ate at the Murphy restaurant. I just remember Uncle Bern saying have whatever you want and we did !!! Loved the custard cones . Uncle Bern was such a loving , caring and giving uncle to us . . He was always asking how the family was doing … especially my mom and dad.
Uncle Bern you have left a great legacy of love , kindness, entrepreneurship , loyalty and laughter . I will be thinking of you all and praying for you Uncle Bern , may you rest in peace .
God bless
Greg , Stacy and Matt Hagerty
