Benedict Dominic Leonard November 24, 1949 - March 7, 2022

It is with sadness and broken hearts that the family of Benedict Dominic Leonard announce his passing on March 7th, 2022 at the age of 72 years.  Benedict was predeceased by his parents Dominic and Catherine Leonard, parents-in-law Arthur and Mary Smith, sister-in-law Pearl Smith, brother-in-law Francis Ryan, nephew Blair Ryan, and lifetime friend Tom Leonard.

Leaving to mourn is the one and only love of his life for fifty-two years, Eileen Leonard; his four daughters and sons-in-law: Kimberly Leonard, Cauleen Daley (Chris), Karen Cooper (Jordan), Sharon Best (Steve), and John Best; his grandchildren: Karsen Best (Best Buddy), Tyson and Lauren Daley, Kerah and Jordy Cooper, and Kahlem and McKenna Best; his siblings which he held close to his heart: Peter (Carrie), Helen, Jerry (Trix), Hannah (Philip), Chrissy (Randy), and Dominic (Jennifer); his brother and sisters-in-law: Fronie, Effie (Kevin), Lawrence (Marion), Clyde (Pauline), Merriam (Tony), Edna (Bill), and Ray (Val); his nieces and nephews (Special Niece Marie), as well as a large circle of friends.

Our Dad was a remarkable spirit who worked diligently and tirelessly his entire life, always going above and beyond for his family. We are comforted by the caring memories of this treasured man along with the legacy of his strength of character and his outstanding resilience and patience. We will be forever thankful for his ability to be lucid and engaged up to his final moment. He will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, and ability to give, to make someone’s life easier. His contagious smile, wholehearted laugh and enthusiastic sense of humor will live on in our hearts. The saying, “God gives the strongest soldiers the toughest battles,” was very applicable to Dad as he was called on to fight his greatest battle of all – cancer. He did what he could to be there for us as long as he could. He loved life and counted his blessings for the time he had on this earth. He has shown us all the meaning of will power, courage, bravery and determination. He was the epitome of strength and courage- a true inspiration to all!

A special thank you to Dr. Armstrong, Dr, Powell, Dr. Downton, Dr. Larsen and Dr. O’Dea of the Cancer Bliss Murphy Centre for their ongoing support, care, and compassion for Dad and to our family. Thank you to the doctors and nurses at the HSC Emergency, the paramedics, the nurses in the chemo unit and of 4 North A and B throughout Dad’s illness and many hospital stays. Thank you to the team at the palliative care unit where dad spent his final days, with a special thank you to Dr. Rogers, Dr. O’Dea, Nurse Practitioner Carmel Collins and LPN Lori Halleran for being there every step of the way for our family. We will be forever grateful for your dedication and support during this difficult time.

Resting at Christ the King Church in Southern Harbour with visitation taking place on Wednesday, March 9th from 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. and on Thursday, March 10th from 10 a.m. -5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. Visitation will be coordinated at the church upon arrival. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at the Miller Centre or a charity of your choice.

“A Life brings tears, smiles and memories. The tears dry; the smiles fade; but the memories last forever!” We have very fond memories of our Dad and they will be sure to keep our candles burning for years to come. Our lives were made richer because of him.

“Those we love, don’t go away, they walk beside us every day……unseen, unheard, but always near. Still loved, still missed and very dear.”
