Baxter Wareham April 8, 1944 - January 13, 2023

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Baxter Wareham, beloved husband, father, poppy, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend.  Leaving to mourn with loving memories his wife of 31 years, Muriel (nee Boutcher) daughter Susan, son Danny (Catherine), and his precious grandchildren Sarah, Morgan and Gillian; brother’s Alfred (Elizabeth), Wilfred (Dr. Mary Jane – deceased), sisters in law Rowena, Sheila (Hiram) and Iris (Jim).  Baxter has many nieces and nephews whom he loved deeply as well as many special cousins.  Baxter was predeceased by his parents Leeland and Elsie (nee Rodway) Wareham, parents in law Rex and Lily (nee Barrett) Boutcher, brothers Percy (Alice), Roy, sisters Thora Hann (Jack) Hilda Pafford (Rev. Basil), brother-in-law Ross Boutcher.

Baxter was a man of many talents. He traveled the world sharing his gift of music and recitation. Baxter spent much of his working life as a teacher, he loved to teach.  He was proud of his students and helped each of them discover their own unique gifts.  During his years as Vice Principal of St. Michaels Integrated school in Arnold’s Cove, Baxter was a beloved teacher who changed the future trajectory of many of those he taught.  Decades after retiring from the teaching profession, it wasn’t strange to hear former students say, “Mr. Wareham taught me more than academics, he taught me what it means to be a kind, dignified, and fair person.”  Following his retirement from teaching, Baxter became Skipper with the Atlantic Pilotage Authority.

Although these are incredible achievements, nothing made Baxter’s eyes glisten with pride quite like his adored children Susan and Danny and later, their beautiful children Sarah, Morgan and Gillian.  Baxter lived a life that kept him humble, kind and grounded in what was most important to him, Faith, Family, and Friends.  It has often been said that people remember kindness and humility, it is because of this we know that Baxter will never be forgotten.

Our family would like to extend deep gratitude to the staff of G.B. Cross Memorial Hospital for their professionalism and the genuine care and concern given to Baxter as well as our family.  Also special thanks to Doctor Geoffrey Fowlow, his long-time family physician, for his years of dedication. Thank you to the staff at Fewer’s Funeral Home for their professionalism and care as well as to all who have helped in any way to make this difficult time a little easier to bear. To all those who called, left facebook messages, sent food, or visited. Your kindness is very much appreciated.

Visitations will be held from 2-9 p.m. on Friday, January 20, 2023 at Fewer’s Funeral Home, Arnold’s Cove.  Memorial service is 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael’s and All Angels Anglican Church on Saturday, January 21, 2023 with interment to follow at the Interfaith Cemetery, Arnold’s Cove.  In his memory donations may be made to St. Michael’s All Angels Anglican Church, Arnold’s Cove.  Please note:  Food/Drink is allowed at the funeral home, however must remain in kitchen area.

Memorial service is 2:00 p.m. at St. Michael's and All Angels Anglican Church on Saturday, January 21, 2023 with interment to follow at the Interfaith Cemetery, Arnold's Cove.

While teaching in Arnold’s Cove a good many years ago, a few of us had the pleasure of going with Baxter aboard his boat one Saturday steaming up around his roots of the tip of Meresheen Island… Harbor Buffett, Brewley, Pushthrough, Haystack, Spencer’s Cove, Tack’s Beach… I believe Baxter found great joy being on the water…The below excerpts from John Masefield’s poem, “Sea Fever,” and a verse from the old song “Fiddler’s Green,” I find appropriate to please offer in his loving memory…

“I must go down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky, and all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by:
And the wheel’s kick and the wind’s song and the white sail’s shaking…
I must go down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide…
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover, and quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the “long trick’s over”…

And I’ll see you some day in “Fiddler’s Green”…
Now I don’t want a harp nor a halo, not me,
Just give me a breeze on a good rolling sea
I’ll play me old squeeze-box as we sail along
With the wind in the riggin’ to sing me a song…

RIP Baxter… My deepest sympathy to Susan, Danny and all the extended family.

Baxter and I lived among the theologs at Queen’s College on Forest Road during our first year at Memorial University in 1962-63. We traveled back and forth to MUN on a chartered bus with the students who were living at Bishop Jones’ Hostel. He had a great sense of humor and pleasant smile that added greatly to life at the college. That year Baxter was one of the characters in the 15th century morality play Everyman that we produced that year. I feel sad learning that Baxter has died, but I feel blessed and thankful to have been his friend and especially for that year at Queen’s so long ago. I know this is a sad time for you. A good man has died, but the world is a better place because he lived. May all that was good and beautiful continue to support and guide you in the days to come. God bless you.

Baxter was a gentleman in every sense of the word. An incident from our teenage years illustrates that he possessed this trait from a very early age. We, the Spencer’s Cove Cyclones, were playing the Harbour Buffett Wild Cats on a very wet and slushy Reid’s Pond. There were also large cracks in the ice. I caught my skate in one of them and was about to get a drenching on the wet ice, but Baxter instinctively reached out to break my fall. Unfortunately, I fell across his hockey stick, breaking it in two. If memory serves me correctly, Baxter got a penalty for tripping me and we scored a goal while he was serving his penalty to win the game 2-1. Naturally, in the interests of the Spencer’s Cove Cyclones, I couldn’t dispute the referee’s call (and, of course, it’s never wise to question a referee anyway), but Baxter’s gentlemanly conduct is the one element of all the games we played against the Wild Cats that has stayed with me ever since. He was a gentle person and a gentleman. Condolences to his family from Cherry and me. We will miss him and we will remember him.
