After a courageous battle with cancer, Alex Sweetland of Clarenville peacefully passed away at the Dr. G. B. Cross Memorial Hospital on December 17, 2025, at the age of 80. Predeceased by his parents, Harold and Susan Sweetland; grandparents, Levi & Johanna Sweetland and William and Dolly Edgecombe; brothers-in-law, William Slaney and Leo Newman; cousin Paula O’Halligan.
Left with everlasting and loving memories are his devoted wife Eileen of 51 years; children, Sheri-Lynne Sweetland (Craig Streicher) of Richmond Hill, ON, Lori-Lee Sweetland (Megan Webb) of Clarenville, NL, and Paul Sweetland of Clarenville, NL; one grandchild, Sam Streicher; brother, Fred Sweetland (Shirley Sweetland) of Yarmouth, NS; aunt, Florence O’Halligan (Ed O’Halligan) of St. John’s and a large circle of family and friends. He will leave behind an empty space that can’t be filled.
Alex will be remembered for his lifelong passion for music, expressed through his singing and his gift playing the guitar, accordion, and the harmonica. His home was often alive with melodies that reflected his gentle spirit and brought joy and comfort to those around him. He loved sharing songs with family, friends, the seniors of Clarenville’s retirement homes, and the local churches where his music will remain a cherished memory. He loved the outdoors and spent many peaceful hours fly fishing with his son Paul, where he found both relaxation and connection with nature. These passions brought him happiness and enriched the lives of those around him.
Resting at Fewer’s Funeral Home in Clarenville on Friday, December 19, 2025 from 7-9 P.M. As per his wishes, cremation will follow.
In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that donations be made directly to Daffodil Place in Alex’s memory.

December 20, 2025 at 10:56 amEileen,
We are so saddened to hear the news of Alex’s passing. We have fond memories of spending New Year’s Eve with your family, Carol and Doug, barbeques, fireworks and the kids feet nearly frozen.
Alex always supported our efforts with Theatre TBA and we had a couple of really great cast parties that lasted until breakfast time.
One night I asked Alex if he could play the Wildwood Flower for me and he nailed that song. He was a good man, good singer, good guitar player and if you asked him, he was a great fisherman although my one 16 hour day with him on a pond only resulted in eating ham and cheese sandwiches.
Lynn and I offer you our most sincere condolences.

December 20, 2025 at 1:40 pmI was so saddened to hear of Alex’s passing. I have very fond memories of Alex during our years with the school boards. He was a great friend and colleague. We spent many an hour platting guitars and singing old songs after our association meetings. He and I supported one another through the board reorganization of the late 90’s and even since. We have also been online friends in recent years and I will always cherish his friendship. To Eileen and all the Sweetland family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all through this difficult time. God bless, Alex, dear friend. Rest in peace. 🙏
